Doric Is Calling

Reinvigorating Disused Spaces

Doric is Calling aims to rejuvenate the use of Doric, the dialect of the Scots language from the North-East of Scotland, whilst also reinvigorating the disused spaces of phone boxes by creating an interactive space which invites users to regain pride in their mother tongue.

My research on the topic revealed that doric speakers feel there are spaces where it is acceptable to communicate in doric and spaces where it isn’t. One of these “spaces” being when you are on a phone call with other doric speakers. This is what led me to using phone boxes as a space to physically and metaphorically explore this.

I created an interactive experience featuring 9 different conversations in doric, from across different demographics. I did this in response to many people I interviewed not seeing themself and identifying as a doric speaker, so I tried to showcase different people.

Using the number pad and receiver in the phone box to control projected transcripts of the conversations.
